David Ellsworth Pro-PM Gouge archive

These gouges, originally designed by master turner David Ellsworth in conjunction with Crown Hand Tools, were extremely well received when first introduced. Due to a rise in demand, Crown has recently introduced it in the well-known Pro-PM (power metallurgy) range, sporting David's unique elliptical grind facility. The excellent new tool constructed from Pro-PM advanced particle steel allows the tool to have up to three times greater edge holding ability over the standard M2 HSS version. The tool also features a stylish 16in (405mm) black ash handle which provides a useful method for differentiating it from its M2 cousin.
The versatile tool, perfect for rough and finish shaping for inside and outside of hollow forms, is available in 12mm (1/2in) size and comes complete with full instructions from David Ellsworth. Pro-PM tools are just as easy to sharpen as M2 and when honed with a diamond or ceramic slipstone, allow an excellent edge to be achieved.
VerdictDuring the short time in which I used the tool I found it to perform faultlessly. The edge retention was very impressive and honing produced, as expected, a superb finish. I used the gouge on ash, yew, sycamore and maple and not once did I experience a hiccup in its performance.
The gouge is finely balanced and has to be one of the sleekest looking tools I have ever had the pleasure of using. I forgot to mention the nice gold signature which adds a real touch of class to this beautiful product. There are also many more Pro-PM tools available in the range, see opposite for details.
