Laurentian Architecture Laurentienne - LAL - is the first new architecture school in Ontario in 40 years and the first in Northern Ontario. The Architecture school is being built downtown on an old railway yard, becoming a mini-campus of new and old buildings.
LGA Architectural Partners have had a rare opportunity to build a new architecture facility and to make it part of the pedagogy, using different materials and technologies, letting it all hang out for the students to see, almost an architectural catalogue in 3D form.
A portion of the building is made of cross-laminated timber. CLT is built up of small pieces of lumber laid up with each ply going 90° to the next, making it strong, dimensionally stable and usable for walls, floors and roofs.
