These wooden mountain gorilla skulls were carved by American artist Laurel Roth as part of the 'Hominids' series of works. They are made from walnut (Juglans nigra), spalted maple (Acer saccharum) and Swarovski crystals. A former park ranger, Roth's work explores 'the biological ramifications of humankind's drive to modify ourselves and our environment'. As well as apes' skulls, she has also created wooden skulls of cows, pigs, sheep and dogs.
