Visitors to prestigious offices in the heart of London's Mayfair are now greeted by a receptionist behind what must rank as one of the most eye catching and expensive pieces of bespoke furniture ever fabricated and installed in this type of commercial environment.
The sculpted reception desk, made of cast aluminium sections with a sprayed on bronze metal surface finish and costing £40,000 to produce, is the new artistic centrepiece of the ground floor entrance lobby for the premium office accommodation at 55 Grosvenor Street.
The 5.5m long, double curvature desk has been designed by Patalab Architecture who were commissioned for a £500,000 refurbishment of the seven storey building's lobby, staircase and landings.
"You could say the desk is the Porsche Carrera of office furniture,"says Albert Hay, Director of the building's owner, Capital and City Plc. "We were hoping for a design feature in the lobby that would become a talking point. But the architects have exceeded our expectations in the way they have combined functionality with artistic style. Like us, our tenants are deeply impressed and so will their visitors be, when they arrive in the lobby."
Two other new features of the lobby are a curved seating unit made from a single piece of sculpted walnut and an etched, plate glass screen providing weather protection at the street entrance door. See below for further details.
