Student Jan wins major award at prestigious furniture crafts exhibition

Jan Waterston, who has just completed his furniture crafts studies at Warwickshire College, has won the prestigious Alan Peters Award for Excellence at the Cheltenham Celebration of Craftsmanship and Design.

The award is a competition designed to commemorate Alan Peters OBE, an internationally respected designer-maker who dedicated his life to the furniture industry. Each year, Celebration of Craftsmanship & Design offers up to three winners the opportunity to exhibit their entry at the exhibition alongside the best in the business, gaining valuable experience and contacts.

Jan's entry into the competition, a cabinet called 'By Nickel and Space', formed part of his portfolio of work at the college. The judges commented: "The piece exhibits crisp and tight craftsmanship and attention to detail and it was agreed that this is an exceptional piece for a young maker, showing a real feel for design – making a piece Alan Peters himself would have been impressed with."

Jan was also one of only two exhibitors to be awarded 'Highly Commended' for his cabinet from The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers - a great achievement considering he was up against some of the best professional furniture makers in the country. His entry into the exhibition was also featured in an editorial in the latest edition of Furniture and Cabinetmaking.

Jan, who is from Birmingham, won the college's Andrew Varah Award for the outstanding furniture-making student this year and is about to start at Rycotewood Furniture Centre to continue his studies at degree level. During his time at the college, he also designed a spectacular 10 metre 'squid bench' for Coombe Country Park near Coventry - a 'making of' video of the project can be seen here.

Warwickshire College offers a whole range of full and part-time furniture making, wood machining and wood-turning courses. For further information, see below.
