Farewell to Strictly Woodturning

Monday 26 November 2012

Axminster Tool Centre put on its third and, sadly, final Strictly Woodturning event on Thursday 1 and Friday 2 November 2012 at the Axe Valley Community College in Axminster.

Over 100 delegates spent Thursday and Friday (during the day) attending demonstrations by 10 top woodturners. The relatively small groups resulted in a much more intimate atmosphere and delegates benefitted from the ratio of delegates to turner. Delegates came from all over the UK and some travelled from Ireland and the Netherlands.

Delegates had the opportunity to enter a piece of their own work into the Delegates' Gallery competition. All delegates voted for the piece of work they liked most; first prize was awarded to Marcel van Berkel from the Netherlands for 'Touch of Frost' and equal second prize went to Robin Goodman of Bristol for 'Whirlwood' and Rod Page of Crewkerne for his Slatted Sycamore Bowl.

The Thursday evening of entertainment saw the 10 professional turners go head-to-head in the Strictly Woodturning competition. At various stages of the competition, they were tasked to produce a goblet, egg & egg cup and finally a ball in just six minutes. The work was judged by a panel of four judges and the audience had an opportunity to vote their favourite turner through to the next round. The competition was won by Gary Rance from Wendover in Buckinghamshire.
