On the whole summer is generally a time of rest for woodworkers. The combination of high temperatures in the workshop making hand work hard work and the list of outside jobs you’ve been putting off all year suddenly take precedence over the current project or projects.

Conveniently though, it’s also the time when some workshops open their doors to the public. I’m helping out on one such event on the 4th August as Robinson House Studios hold their annual open day. If you need to brush up on your sharpening technique or have a query about hand tools in general the Classic Hand Tools team will be on stand by to answer your questions. Representing the power tool brigade will be professional teams from both Festool and Lamello. Robinson House Studio operates all year round as a professional workshop building some of the most unique creations you’ll ever see. It’s also the base for a range of designer maker courses and a bench rental scheme for post-graduate students embarking on a new career. All in all loads to see and do, especially if you pass by my bench where participation is actively encouraged. No entrance fee and plenty of parking – also free.

Where: Robinson House Studio, Robinson Road, Newhaven, East Sussex BN9 9BL

When: 4th August 11.00am to 4.00pm
