The new Veritas chisels are turned and milled from O1 tool steel, chosen for its ease of sharpening and good edge retention at low bevel angles. Each chisel has superb balance, with the centre of gravity at or below the tang/socket connection. The blades taper from shoulder to tip for strength and rigidity. Parallel sides and true bevel edges give full clearance when working into a corner. Lapping to a flatness of 0.0127mm or better over the entire surface ensures the face of the blade is smooth and true. The blade-to-handle connection is similar to the Japanese, with a tang and a socket-like ferrule. The tang has flats to prevent the handle from rotating. Repeated mallet blows will only tighten the joint. Kiln baking the hard maple handle at a high temperature eliminates nearly all the moisture content and caramelises the natural sugars in the wood. This imparts a rich, dark colour, while helping to seal it against humidity changes. The handle has shallow flats parallel to the blade back. The chisels are sold in 1⁄4in, 3⁄8in, 1⁄2in, 3⁄4in and 1in widths, with blades ranging from 117mm to 130mm long. The 1⁄4in and 3⁄8in chisels have 30 primary bevel angles; the others are ground at 25. All have 2 micro-bevels and require only final honing before use. Made in Canada.
