Beyond Containment Wood Art Exhibit - News
Thursday 12 April 2012
The American Association of Woodturners Gallery of Wood Art in St Paul is proud to present Beyond Containment from March 4 - May 24, 2012. The exhibition travels to San Jose, CA from June 7 - 10, 2012.
Featuring an international roster of studio wood artists, Beyond Containment invites artists and visitors to think beyond the vessel, one of woodturning's most basic forms. What is containment? What is beyond containment?
Kristin LeVier, of Idaho, has created a piece that bursts with a kind of biological exuberance. Bush Enduring Vision Award-winning Minnesota woodcarver Janel Jacobson has created a beautifully-realised and slyly humorous Komodo dragon hatching out of its shell. Although named after the juggling diabolo, the lacy, fragile sculpture by French artist Pascal Oudet, Diabolo 21, subtly evokes the feminine form and a nuclear cooling tower.
The 38 artists in the exhibition are nationally and internationally-known sculptors working in wood. Although long under-represented in the sculpture world, many museums are increasing their wood art collections, recognizing the contributions that artists working in wood are making in contemporary sculpture.
The exhibition will travel in June to San Jose, California, for the AAW's annual symposium June 8-10, 2012. All work will be auctioned to raise funds for the AAW's Professional Outreach Program, which offers professional development assistance and sponsors emerging artist programs, panel discussions and workshops.
